    Why create movies???…
Great way for students to communitcate their ideas outside of the four classroom walls.
Students will likely put more effort into a project if they are the ones creating it and coming up with their information for their movie.

    affect teaching??? affect learning???
This will affect teaching dramatically. The shift of power and control CAN be put into the students hands. The teacher will now become more of a facilitator and active learning will now “kick into gear” for students.

Movies are another tool through which students can express their mastery of a topic or skill.

As a drama teacher, my students are performing all the time. They write scripts and then film and edit them.

I know I LOVE going to the movies- they grab my attention, engage all of my senses- I am assuming that my students feel the same way too= maybe even more so- they seem to be on You tube quite a bit- at least they are always talking about it- so, I think movies and clips are something that would be right up their alley as an avenue for sharing information or creating material.

When students create movies they are applying knowledge in way that permits them to express themselves while conveying a message. The multimedia aspect is not only engaging but allows for individual creativity or group collaboration.

Movies would provide a dynamic option for students to demonstrate their understanding of the academic material. This would also provide an opportunity for a mor hands-on approach, too.

I think movies are a great way to accomplish many things. It is a great way for visual learners to be engaged. By doing and seeing, they learn in a way that helps them. It is also a great way to learn information and review information. Students can learn a piece of information, master it, create a movie explaining it, and then show it to their classmate for them to learn the information.

I think that some of the skills we teach kids through writing assignments could also be accomplished by having them make videos. For instance, I assign my Comp students an Observation Essay which requires them to describe a person, place or event in such a way. The challenge of this assignment is that students decide upon what impression they want to convey of this place or event and all the details they include should contribute to this impression. I think I could just as easily assign students to make a movie (like the examples in the 2 videos you posted) in which they convey an impression of a place or activity. In this way, they would be acting as reporters. However, I think students would have to be trained in some of the fundamentals of video interpretation: how sound and camera angles contribute to meaning. One potential problem with this, though, is that teachers would have to provide some means for the students who don’t own video cameras to borrow cameras for the project.

I might consider having students create a movie for one the Observation Essay next year to give them a break from all the essay writing.

my students are currently working on movies of animals they researched that live in Missouri. Resources for all students to video is an issue so we are making picture movies and they will talk throughout the pictures. We have gotten our pictures from a variety of websites that are “free to use” for these type of projects (such as morguefile – gotta put a plug in :) and my students drew pictures and scanned them in as well. We will see how they turn out :)
Anyway, they were so excited when I told them they were going to learn a new program and to MAKE A MOVIE they about fell out of their chair! That’s plenty enough motivation for me to tackle this project! Besides, I think at this point, a lot of them don’t believe they can do it and will be very surprised in the end!
